Precycling - What is that?

The average person produces approximately 1650 pounds of waste a year. Much of this waste can be recycled

Precycling is reducing the amount of waste we produce.  This lessens the need to find ways to dispose of waste or the need to find alternative uses for the waste.

How Can I precycle ?

Think before you buy

  • Buy items with minimal packaging
  • Buy economy sizes whenever  possible
  • Purchase packaging made from recycled material - then recycle that
  • Purchase products made from recycled material - close  the recycling loop
  • Buy produce that is loose, not the ones packaged in styrofoam and plastic wrap - better yet - Grow your own
  • Buy things in concentrate whenever possible, this saves so much packaging
  • Buy CFL lightbulbs they last much longer (make sure to dispose of properly)

Think before you use

  • Use reusables - not disposables. Avoid products that are meant to be thrown away after just one use - such as disposable razors, paper plates, plastic silverware or plastic cups.
  • Rechargeable batteries are a great option to batteries that you discard after using
  • Bring your own bag - Instead of using so many plastic or paper bags at the store
  • Cups and Bottles Don't use throw away cups at work or in the car, use a reusable mug or bottle.
